What size generator do I need?
The better question is do I want a generator that just takes care of the necessities or do I need everything powered. Although it is nice to have everything powered in the event of a power loss it’s also a more expensive option. If you think you can get by with just the necessities, i.e. furnace, well, refrigerator, a few lights and TV then before you lose power, try turning off power to everything except those items and see if you can manage.
Next question to ask yourself is do I want or need an automatic standby generator or a portable? If you don’t mind pressing a few buttons and moving a portable unit out of your garage, you can save some more money by purchasing a portable. Keep in mind that portables run on gas so if you lose power for more than a day or two be prepared to run out and get gas.
